July 18, 1948: "The lookout is a 14x14 glass enclosed building on a 30-foot tower. The tower is enclosed to make a garage and storage space. Large, heavy shutters hang down over the windows to keep out the snow in winter. During occupancy, the shutters are pushed out and braced on the railings of the walkway around the outer wall." July 28, 1948: "Typical of the young men who train and study to become foresters is Gene Hawkes who manned his first lookout at 16 and is on duty at the Warm River lookout for his second consecutive year. He is majoring in forestry at ISC where he won the 1948 Intermountain collegiate boxing championship in the 125 pound division.
Gene's home for the summer is a glass enclosed building atop a thirty foot tower. A minimum of furniture is in the one room, mostly builtin essentials such as bunks, table and cupboards. The center of the room is given over to the Alidade fire finder and telephone. The building is grounded against lightning strikes.
He will paint the lookout inside and out and paint direction indicators on the roof for fliers and make whatever repairs are necessary. He keeps a log book in which he enters events of the day and notes the location of lightning strikes. Through binoculars he checks daily for signs of smoke particularly in the area struck by lightning." (The Post-Register)
