August 23, 1934: "Jack Noble, forest lookout on Swan mountain in the Coeur d'Alene national forest, near this city, is going to pension his little cocker spaniel dog, 'Hobo,' for life. 'Hobo' came to Jack's rescue yesterday morning when his master was, to say the least, in a very embarrassing predicament.
Early Tuesday Jack left his lookout station to hike to Red Horse mountain for some supplies left there for him by the forest service. It was pretty dark in the woods and Noble didn't see a black bear cub lying in his path. He stumbled over the cub, which squawked in protest, bringing the angry mother bear charged out of the brush.
Noble fled, with the bear in hot pursuit. Unable to outrun the bear, Noble shinnied up a small tree, just seconds ahead of mama bruin.
The bear tried to climb after him, then shook the tree vigorously--so much so that Noble almost lost his grip.
It was at this point that 'Hobo' came to his master's rescue. He nipped at the bear's hindquarters, distracting her attention. The mother bear tried to fight on both fronts at once, sparring with 'Hobo' for a minute and then returning to cuff the tree. But finally the spaniel's repeated attacks became too much for her and she chased 'Hobo' some distance away from the tree and Noble came down and beat a retreat to his lookout.
The plucky spaniel then abandoned his attack and Bruin ambled off into the woods to examine her injured cub." (Sandpoint Daily Bulletin)
