September 20, 1939: "Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Nogus returned to their ranch Tuesday after spending the summer on a forest lookout near Horse Creek." (Recorder Herald)
July 19, 1951: "Herb Miller of Salmon left Monday to take over the Oreana lookout for the summer, forest service officials said this week. The manning of the Oreana post in the Salmon National Forest now nearly completes the lookouts for the fire season." (The Recorder Herald)
August 28, 1955: "The Salmon National Forest's worst fire of the season was reported raging out of control Saturday in a heavy stand of lodgepole pine, 100 miles northwest of here (Salmon), despite efforts of smokejumpers and ground fighters.
The fire was reported to be 'crowning' and 'spotting,' hindering fighters in efforts to control it. The blaze, which covers approximately 50 acres, started Thursday.
Al Hays, forest administrative assistant, said the blazing region is almost inaccessible.
Fifty-six smokejumpers from Missoula, Mont., and 24 from McCall have been flown into the area. Hays said the area was particularly valuable as a watershed and wildlife area.
Men and supplies were being moved by helicopter from Oreana Lookout." (The Post-Register)
August 16, 1956: "Prompt control work kept the fire, which broke out over the week end, from spreading, he said, and it has been held to an area of about 60 areas.
The fire is burning along Roan ridge in the Horse creek area, about 65 miles northwest of Salmon. Helicopters are being used to ferry men and supplies to the fire lines from the Oreana lookout station, about five or six miles from the fire." (The Oregonian)
May 1, 1969: "The forest is expected to abandon one lookout this year, Oreana, on Horse Creek. The lookout has received little use and with daily patrols by air is becoming less valuable." (The Recorder-Herald)
