1915: "Also a tower on Elk Mountain forty-two (42) feet high; these towers are built with a platform about seven (7) feet square and with a good strong railing around it, so that the lookout men can move about without danger of falling off. I believe that each lookout, where it is not reasonable to expect that a lookout man can give us as good service if he has to climb a tree twenty or thirty feet high and then hang on to the limbs to keep from falling off, as he can if he has a good solid platform to move about at ease without danger of falling off." "Elk Mountain Lookout Cabin...............(7-38-7E) $75.00." (9th Annual Report of the Clearwater TPA)
September 9, 1921: "Phil Canton came in from the woods Sunday and departed for Lewiston Monday morning. Phil was located on Elk Mountain lookout for the Clearwater Timber Protective Association during the fire season and enjoyed his summer outing in the woods." (Clearwater Republican)
September 23, 1921: "Lew Crampton, who had charge of the Elk Mountain Lookout for the Clearwater Timber Protective Association during the fire season, departed for Spokane on Saturday's morning passenger." (Clearwater Republican)
