July 24, 1935: "Chancey Stroud was treated to a surprise last Thursday morning when on arising he discovered, as he supposed, a tramp asleep on his living room couch. But when he sought to arouse the fellow to order him out he found it to be only Jimmy Waddington who had returned about midnight from the Hat creek fire, and too dirty and weary to go properly to bed had flung himself on the couch and was sleeping the sleep of utter exhaustion. Later Jimmy secured the use of the Stroud car for a trip to town for groceries and equipment and at 2:30 Friday morning he left for the lookout at Sheephorn peak where he will be on duty the rest of the summer." July 19, 1952: "Bodies of two Idaho fliers, Smith Stoddard, 37, Salmon pilot, and William Smothers, 23, Salmon River pilot, were reached Friday by a ground party in the rugged terrain near Sheephorn Lookout in the Sawtooth Mountain.
Members of the party said both men appeared to have been killed instantly.
The plane, missing since Monday, was spotted Friday morning. The men were enroute to the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in the primitive area of Central Idaho." (The Salt Lake Tribune)
July 1, 1965: "A new lookout to be constructed atop Sheephorn Mountain in the Hat Creek area on the Salmon Ranger District." (The Recorder Herald)
October 21, 1965: "Work is nearing completion on a new lookout on Sheephorn Mountain in the Salmon National Forest.
Forest crews began the project Aug. 1 and are expected to have it finished by Nov. 1.
Arthur Bevan forest engineer said the lookout is between Iron Creek and Hat Creek and is replacing one which was abandoned years ago.
Extensive logging over the past six years left an area of high fire potential because og logging slash. Bevan said and the lookout will be available for use next fire season.
Lower section of the two-story building is of cinderblock with the upper portion wood." (The Recorder Herald)
March 27, 1967: "Sheephorn Lookout is to be withdrawn as an administrative site to afford protection to the new lookout building which has been constructed there." (The Post-Register)
