July 26, 1952: "Buildings under construction on Cottonwood Butte, 18 miles due south of Craigmont and about 25 miles by road, for housing a radio relay and a lookout station for detecting forest fires are expected to be completed and ready for occupancy this coming week. This was reported Thursday by Vern Spekker, fire warden for the Craig Mountain Fire District with headquarters at Craigmont. Mr. and Mrs. Wood, Lewiston, will operate the station. There have been no fires so far this season, Spekker said, just a few minor ones." (Lewiston Morning Tribune)
January 4, 1953: "The forester's report covered all phases of the state forest department's activities during the two year period ending Dec. 31, 1952, along with reports on department finance matters for the biennum ending June 30, 1952.
Guernsey listed the outstanding departmental accomplishments for the two year period as : ...Construction of modern, electrified lookout houses on Cottonwood and Mica peaks." (Idaho State Journal)
June 12, 1955: "The Air Force will begin construction in August on a 'communications installation' at Cottonwood Butte, southeast of Lewiston, according to Sen. Dworshak (R-Idaho).
A forest fire lookout station and a Highway Department radio station are now maintained on top of the 5,000-foot-high butte, four miles west of Cottonwood.
Considerable construction and engineering work has been under way in the Cottonwood area for several months, but sources at Cottonwood said there had been 'only rumors' about what was to be built." (The Post-Register)
