August 23, 1934: "Although hundreds of animals, including bear and deer, have been cremated, the fire has not claimed ranch or other buildings. The Flash Peak lookout station, an important link in the forest service's system in that region, was only about a mile in front of the flames at midnight, and fear was expressed it would be destroyed. The vast white pine stand there has not been touched, but a shift in the wind would send the flames roaring into it." (The Morning Oregonian)
