August 18, 1944: "Raging 'out of control' 10 miles south of here (Shoshone), a range fire which started at 10:30 a.m. today was still defying efforts of staff fire fighters from the fifth grazing district and an unknown number of volunteers this afternoon.
Located within a mile of the Notch butte fire lookout station, the blaze does not endanger any property other than the grazing land." (Times-News)
August 24, 1944: "A range fire breaking out shortly after 1 p.m. yesterday along the Union Pacific railroad's right-of-way east of Besslen, charred more than 100 acres before it was brought under control a short time later, Jack Keith, district grazier at Shoshone, reported. The fire was believed to have been started by sparks from a locomotive, Keith reported.
The fire was brought under control by railroad crews and stockmen acting as volunteer fire fighters, Keith said.
The fire was first detected by Julius Imgard, look-out at Notch Butte, shortly after his daughter, Miss Doris Imgard, who fills the position during the morning hours, left her post." (Times-News)
July 29, 1945: "A rain storm late yesterday was credited by Jack Keith, Shoshone district grazier, as 'saving a good many additional acres from being burned over, following a 2,000 acre fire which started here at noon today.'
One man was forced by the advancing flames to vacate the Shoshone grazier's station and lookout tower when a brush fire threatened grazing service equipment, Keith reported.
At a late hour today, the fire had charred more than 2,000 acres and had disrupted telephone and power service in the area." (Times-News)
July 16, 1954: "Conditions at the Notch Butte lookout station have been hot for the last few days but not from fire.
On Tuesday the temperature at the station soared to 103, the hottest on record." (Times News)
